My Diary #1 - 05 . 21 . 2020

Humane meat? “fresh and organic”? cage-free? free range? “grass fed”? Yeah...I don’t think so. As a vegan, I think one of the major excuses we hear from those who chose to not be vegan or at least plant-based are these: “What about humane meat? Where do you get protein? You can’t get protein from “plants”! Plants have feelings too!” and the list goes on.

I read a quote saying - “There is nothing human about killing an animal that wants to live.”

This describes the problems that we choose to ignore and those who care about their taste buds more than anything. People always throw away the ethics and tell me that cows have to be milked or else they will explode. Yes, that’s true but can we just back track and recall that nothing is humane about stealing the milk from a mother cow, the milk that is meant for their calf. I do not care if the cow is a backyard cow grazing in the grass because why? Because the problems start when the cow becomes a product for humans rather than them being considered another living being. When the cow no longer had the purpose it had been intended for, but forced to give purpose for humans. This refers to ALL animals. Chickens were genetically modified to lay 300 eggs A YEAR when they’re supposed to lay around 12 eggs a year which is their menstrual cycle. When chicks are born, they are moved to be separated by their gender. The male chicks cannot lay eggs and they are thrown in to be slaughtered just because they aren’t “useful” but to be born to die and in suck a painful way that words cannot describe how they must have felt. “But won’t there be too many chickens if we stopped eating eggs?” Realistically speaking, the world isn’t going to stop eating eggs overnight. But, if we start eating less and less eggs from chickens over time, they wouldn’t have to lay as much. Maybe one day chickens would only have to lay 12 eggs every year. This is a basic example of supply and demand which is what our worlds trade evolves around. To me, I don’t care if you eat “humane meat” as much as it is better than a lot of factory farms and the least cruel in terms of living conditions and freedom of movement. Killing an animal for meat is not even close to being humane. It goes back to that one problem - the problem starts when we humans use cows, ducks, pigs, turkeys, sheep, coyotes, goats, chickens, horses, rabbits, all animals that scream when humans hurt them for their selfish desires. Those screams come from their emotions of fear. They take care of their children as we humans do as well. Just because they cannot speak words does not mean they should be considered a thing. Look beyond and do not ignore how your meat is grown, look at WHY that meat is grown and question your morals.

We all, including animals, seek peace, justice, and respect from beings around us, and hopefully, we give them the same. It shouldn’t be...
